Farmer's Markets on The Sunshine Coast
UPDATED AUGUST 2017
Farmer's markets are the original food retail store, where, for centuries, farmers have gathered to sell their food wares. In recent years there has been a renaissance for farmer's markets in Australia, as consumers move towards sourcing fresher, local produce for their groceries. The Sunshine Coast is an area that has MORE farmer's markets than Woolworths and Coles stores!!! How incredible is that, MORE FARMER'S MARKETS THAN THE BIG TWO! That is the power of community right there.
The Sunshine Coast region has the benefit of being a major food growing area and having a climate that is agreeable year round to allow these markets to thrive. This blog will explore most of the farmer's markets on the Sunshine Coast, and I will let you know which ones are my pick on the Coast for best produce, real farmers and variety. Look for the one's with Ashley's Pick beside them.
My special tip for you, is to check in with the stall holder as to whether they are the grower. Some stallholders ARE NOT farmers, they buy produce from the central markets in Brisbane. Support the farmer by going direct as much as you can!
Noosa Farmer's Market - Ashley's Pick
This market is the gem of the North Coast, hugely popular with locals and tourists alike, people travel just to experience this market. Noosa Farmer's Markets prides itself on ensuring all fresh produce stalls are run by farmers themselves. Like most markets on the coast there is a great range of local prepared foods AND lots of breakfast/brunch stalls to make an awesome morning out.
Noosa Marina Market
The little market just down the road from the main Noosa Farmer's Market, this market is a great option if the crowds aren't your thing, with more focus on crafts, you can still grab your week's fruits and veges at this market.
Peregian Beach Markets
More crafts and clothing than food, but still a great beachside option to grab some fresh produce, top pick is the stall held by the Gabbanas (from the Mary Valley). My hubby grew up just down the road from these guys, and they are true blue Aussie farmers!
The original market on the coast, running since 1979, this market is a tourist attration, which makes each market day busy and hectic. With a major focus on arts, crafts and trinkets, you can still get fresh produce here. I would recommend this market only if it local to you, or you are looking for a great day out with the family, it's not your typical easy park, grab your fruit and veg and go market.
Yandina Plant and Produce Market - Ashley's Pick
A beautiful country market, great relaxed atmosphere near Yandina. You can grab plants for your garden, as well as local fresh produce.
Fishermans Road Market - Ashley's Pick
This is my favourite Sunday market (it is the closest one to me!), run by the Mooloolaba Lion's Club. There are a handful of quality farmer run stalls, where you can get super fresh and unique fruits and vegetables. Look out for farmer John, he can only grow 8-9 months of the year (summer is a tough one for growing veges sometimes!), he has some amazing produce.
Hinterland Harvest Markets
This market is a relative newcomer to the market scene. 100% chemical free, with a good range of organic options, plus organic vegetable seedlings!!! Definitely worth checking out, there is generally free music and some breakfast options too.
Not quite a farmers market, but this little shop is one that supports local growers! We love what these guys do, and just had to mention them. Imagine if your local farmers market became a permanent one - the big supermarkets might get a little worried!
Kawana Waters Farmer's Market - Ashley's Pick
A sister to the Noosa Farmer's Market, this market is almost a duplicate of the Noosa one, great produce and some great breakfast options (check out the Sunflower Hotel!).
More arts, crafts and fashion than fresh food, the Caloundra Markets are a good place to go if you want to combine an outing with some fruit and vege shopping!
Caloundra Country and Farmer's Market
6am-noon Sunday - Currimundi School
A great little market, more focus on fruit and veges. You can also grab some awesome probiotics from Dianne there - she does an amazing living probiotic drink!
Crystal Waters Market
A great family trip to explore the hinterland, the Crystal Waters market is held once per month, so not ideal for stocking the fridge, but definitely worth the visit to see a permaculture community in action! The best long ferment sourdough on the coast is baked here by Les Bread's - well worth it!
A great local market, much smaller in comparison to the coastal neighbours, but worth it if it is your local!
Sunshine Coast Wide
Can't get to a market, have the market delivered to you! Fresh Box bring local, fresh and organic produce to your door. They work with local farmers to get their produce out to the masses - a next best option for you if you are unable to get to a market this weekend! Tell them Ashley sent you!
